Roter Eiserapfel
Believed to have come from Germany, where it is widespread. Is registered first in 1700. The variety is also known under the synonyms Maegaard apple, Rote Eiserapfel, Eiser Rouge, Pomme Rouge Eiser et al. In sweden apple also been called Årsäple. It was believed, it could be stored a year.
The tree is growing quite strongly and get a big, wide crown. It is very hardy and not very susceptible to diseases. It takes a long time to get a crop, but gradually it provides a high yield. The variety is triploid and a poor pollinator. There are few seeds developed in the apples.
The fruit is medium sized, round, somewhat flat with greenish-yellow base color and on the sunny side with reddish brown topcoat. The flesh is quite juicy with tart taste. Picked in late October and used in January to April or longer as food and eating apple. It is possible to save the apple all the way to June-July(UK). |
