Laxton's Superb Apple variety
Is an English apple developed at the Laxton nursery company in Bedford. The variety was first mentioned in the English magazine The Gardeners' Chronicle in 1918. The variety could be ordered in 1921. In 1927, Laxton's Superb was offered from Mathiesen Nursery in Korsør, Denmark. The variety is said to be a cross between Wyken Pippin and Cox Orange.
Initially, the trees are tall and slender with long and thin shots, later the branches are forced out of the fruit weight. The variety is fertile and bear early.
The fruit is medium. On the tree the fruit is greenish and brownish. During storage, the basic colour become green yellow to yellow. The tire colour that can cover most of the fruit is brown red, on the sun side and with darker stripes and splashes. The meat is white yellow with yellow green veins, it is firm and not very juicy. The taste is similar to Cox Orange, but is not so rich and aromatic.
Laxton's Superb belongs to the sweet apples. It can be stored until April, but becomes slightly rubbery.
